Around Singapore in 80 Years
AROUND SINGAPORE IN 80 YEARS is a multimedia documentary theatre production that traces the evolving identity of Singapore through the eyes of a timeless taxi driver. Set within the intimate, ever-moving space of his taxi, the play journeys from post-war 1945 to contemporary Singapore, blending projection, song and dance to bring the nation’s transformation to life.
Using historically accurate events but fictional characters and stories, the production explores pivotal moments in Singapore’s past — from racial unrest and nation-building to globalisation and cultural achievements. Along the way, the taxi driver encounters a rich tapestry of passengers from all walks of life: each reflecting a part of the country’s spirit, challenges, and aspirations. Multimedia projections transport the audience through iconic locations and decades, while stylised movement and dance sequences enhance the emotional and symbolic layers of the narrative. Themes such as civic responsibility, racial harmony, international connectivity, and the rise of Arts and Sports in Singapore are woven into this poignant and reflective journey. Performed by a versatile cast of three playing multiple roles, AROUND SINGAPORE IN 80 YEARS is a moving theatrical tribute to the resilience, complexity, and unity of the Singaporean people across generations.
